Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides)

Vetiver is a tall, tightly packed perennial grass, but for the oil, only the roots are used. The use of the roots is said to be an aspect of this oil’s ability to ground and center. Vetiver has been used frequently by the perfume industry, and its earthy, rich tones lend it to an anchoring position in the blend. Vetiver is cool, moist, and energetically Yin by nature. Vetiver oil can clear Heat, can be cooling and calming to a hyperactive mind, and reinforces the Earth element.

Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)

Ylang Ylang is indigenous to Southeast Asia and has long been one of the most important raw materials for perfume making. Ylang Ylang oil is deeply calming by nature and has a supportive action toward the Heart system. The oil works to clear Heat from the Heart and harmonizes the Shen thereby calming the nervous system and reducing nervous tension. Ylang Ylang also supports the Kidney Qi bringing balance to the Heart and Kidney connection. Ylang Ylang helps to reduce anxiety and the urge to withdraw, gently encouraging the unlocking of deeply blocked feelings and emotions.

Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia)

Spike Lavender shares the spotlight with True Lavender in the flower garden. While it is a variety of lavender, it has very different actions as compared to its sister, true lavender. Spike lavender has warming qualities that can stimulate area suffering with Cold invasion that leads to aching and stiffness in muscles and joints. Having a strong affinity to the Metal Element, Spike Lavender has a pungent quality that is especially helpful for acute grief or sadness.

True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

This hardy and fragrant shrub can be found in nearly every garden in the Pacific Northwest. Lavender has been highly prized for its fresh, soft fragrance since ancient times. The cool, dispersing, ad relaxing qualities of lavender oil can act to reduce heat and inflammation. This oil is soothing and supporting to the Qi of the Heart system and may be useful with insomnia, palpitations, and nervous tension.

Virginia Cedarwood (Juiperus virginiana)

Native to northern Europe, southwest Asia, and North America. Prehistoric dwelling sites in the Swiss lakes were found to have the remains of juniper berries. Dry and woody, Virginia Cedarwood oil has an action on the Lung, Kidney, and Bladder systems. It also has an effect on lymphatic circulation. Primarily decongestant, it gently tonifies the Spleen system to drain water-dampness.
