Functions of the Kidney and Bladder

Anatomical diagram of the kidneys and bladder.

URINARY BLADDER

The bladder stores and controls the release of urine and removes liquid waste and toxins from the body.

KIDNEY

From a Western perspective, the kidneys filter and purify the blood by sending excess substances to the bladder, and maintain pH, mineral, and electrolyte balance. From an Eastern perspective, they govern reproduction, produce bone marrow, regulate water movement, and house the “Zhi,” which is in charge of mental drive and courage.

How Can Nutrition Support the Kidney System?

Within all of the organ systems, there are foods that support the health of the system, as shown in the image to the left. There are also foods to avoid in order to support the systems. For example, foods to avoid to improve the health of the kidney system include dairy, beer, high-sugar foods, and raw or cold foods.
