Embracing Water
Dec. 2021- We are finally moved! Things are mostly in the places that they will live. The feelings of fear are fading and I am falling into the rhythm of the new office.
As we move toward the Winter, I need to start thinking about how I should be responding to the season. Winter is a time of Yin. It is the time of the year that is the darkest and coldest, especially here in the Pacific North West. I need to reserve my energy, building it up for the promise of the Spring to come. Now that my practice is fully moved and settled in, I need to nurture myself by embracing the Water element as well as the Winter season. These are part of the Kidney/Urinary Bladder system in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is said that the Kidney stores our “Jing” which is also known as the vital essence. This essence is the source of our wisdom, resistance, vitality, longevity, and creation. From a western perspective, this is associated with the endocrine system, reproductive system, and overall stamina.
During this Water time, I know I need to support my Kidney/Urinary Bladder system by slowing down, hibernating and doing some serious introspection. It wasn’t very many days ago that fear was overwhelming me. Fear is one of the most damaging emotions to the Kidney system. One way to keep fear from damaging the Kidney is what I call embracing Water. When we try to grab and hold water, what happens? It flows right through our fingers without stopping. Imagine standing in front of a waterfall and reaching out to embrace the flow. I will be soaking wet but I will not be holding any water in my arms. This is how I need to approach the emotion of fear. I must allow myself to face the fear but I must let it flow through my arms and not hold onto any of it. It is important that I remember to practice this myself especially now that we are entering the Winer/Water time.
So for this season, I will be working on finding quiet and stillness in my days, allowing my emotions (especially my fear) to flow through my arms without holding on, building my wisdom, and storing up my strength to build my stamina as I look toward Spring.
