Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Ginger has been used for centuries around the world for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It was one of the first products to travel the Great Silk Road from Asia to Europe. Ginger oil is warming, invigorating, and decongesting. It has a broad range of actions on the whole system. In particular, it is strongly stimulating and tonifying to the Yang energy of the Spleen/Stomach system. It also strongly tonifies the Heart, Lung, and Kidney systems. It is a circulatory stimulant and tonic of the Heart system and can strengthen the Yang-energy of the Kidney system. Ginger is also known for its powerful ability to drive out Cold pathogens.

Cinnamon leaf (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)

Fresh cinnamon leaves of true cinnamon grow fastest during the monsoon season. Ancient Chinese manuscripts dating back to 2800 BCE have been found that reference the use of cinnamon leaves. Cinnamon leaf oil is invigorating to the Blood and supports the Qi of the Spleen system. It can also be used to Release the exterior when there has been a Cold Pathogen invasion by inducing sweat.

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)

Patchouli is native to Southeast Asia, where the shrub grows wild in the foothills and low mountains. Patchouli has been used for centuries in the medicines of Malaysia, China, and Japan. The oil is warm by nature but also has an anti-inflammatory property. Due to its antiseptic properties, it is a valuable skin remedy. Patchouli supports the Earth element through its warmth and sweetness. It is one of the most grounding oils and helps to stabilize the mind (Shen) when overthinking and worry threaten to cause imbalance. It also helps to release suppressed emotion, further supporting the Qi of the Spleen system.

Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)

Sweet orange originated in Asia but was introduced into both the West Indies and Florida by explorers. Dries sweet orange peel has been used medicinally by Ancient Chinese doctors for centuries. They used both ripe and unripe rinds of the sweet orange primarily to stimulate and ease digestion. Sweet orange oil has the ability to unblock and circulate stagnant Qi, especially when it involves the Liver and Stomach systems. It strongly supports the smoothing of the Qi of the Liver System and is strongly related to the Wood element easing tension and frustration. It is warm and sunny, which can disperse the moodiness and irritability of Qi stagnation.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)

The history of sweet fennel as both a culinary and medicinal plant reaches back to Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and India. Fennel oil has a strong action in the digestive or transformation and transportation actions of the Spleen/Stomach system. It can stimulate the flow of Qi in the abdomen (middle Jiao), reducing symptoms of indigestion, bloating, nausea, belching, and flatulence. It also has the ability to disperse Cold Phlegm while also invigorating the Qi in the Kidney system. Fennel oil is closely associated with the Earth element and is supportive of the spirit of the Spleen (Yi), which allows for intellectual thinking, productivity, and creativity while reducing over-thinking and over-analyzing.
